Taino Bay is much more than simply a place to get off the ship.

Our first impression of Taino Bay was extremely positive.

The port immediately feels bright, colorful, and lively.

As soon as you walk into the area, you’ll notice:

• Shops
• Water features

It feels more like a tropical village than a traditional cruise terminal.

That was one of the things we appreciated most.

Some cruise ports can feel extremely crowded.

You get off the ship and immediately feel as though everyone is standing on top of one another.

Taino Bay feels more open.

There is more space to move around.

The port seems to breathe.

That makes a difference, especially when multiple passengers are arriving at the same time.

The Pools at Taino Bay

One of the biggest attractions at Taino Bay is the water.

And this is where the port really excels.

After walking through the welcome area, one of the first things you’ll encounter is a large pool.

There is seating surrounding the pool, along with a bar.

The area immediately feels inviting.

You can easily spend several hours here without feeling like you need to go anywhere else.

The First Pool

The first pool area is a great place to relax.

There is plenty of seating around the pool.

During the day, there may also be live entertainment.

When we visited, local performers and dancers provided entertainment near the pool.

That added to the atmosphere.

You could sit by the water, enjoy a drink, and watch local performers without having to pay an additional admission fee for the entertainment.

The pool area is also a convenient place to begin exploring the port.

From there, you can easily walk to:

Comfortable Seating Throughout Taino Bay

One of the things that immediately stood out to us was the amount of seating available throughout Taino Bay.

There are lounge chairs everywhere.

But there are also much larger seating areas.

Some of the beds are large enough for multiple people to share.

Others look almost like oversized daybeds.

If you’re traveling with a family or a group, these larger seating areas can be particularly appealing.

You can relax together without having to search for several individual chairs.

A Great Place to Relax Near the Ship

On the far side of the first pool, there are additional seating areas facing the cruise ships.

Although we wouldn’t describe this as a traditional beach area, it provides a relaxing place to sit while still being close to the water.

There are large loungers and beds where you can relax and watch the ships.

You can also take a swim nearby.

This is a good option if you want to remain close to the ship while enjoying the port.

Don’t Stop at the First Pool

Although the first pool is attractive and convenient, we recommend continuing to explore.

It’s easy to get comfortable.

You find a chair.

You sit down.

You order a drink.

And suddenly half the day is gone.

But Taino Bay has more to see.

If you continue walking through the port, you’ll eventually reach a second major pool area.

And this pool has a very different atmosphere.

The Second Pool at Taino Bay

The second pool felt somewhat more family-oriented to us.

You’ll likely see more children in this area.

The atmosphere is still relaxed, but it feels a little more active than the first pool.

One of the highlights is the layout.

Rather than being one simple rectangular pool, the area includes different sections and smaller pool areas.

This makes the entire space feel much larger.

You can move around and find different areas depending on what kind of experience you want.

The Pool Hammocks

One of our favorite discoveries was the hammocks in the water.

These are exactly what they sound like.

You can sit or relax in a hammock partially surrounded by the pool.

It’s the kind of feature that looks simple but ends up being surprisingly enjoyable.

We ended up spending much longer in the hammocks than expected.

They are perfect for relaxing in the water without having to actively swim.

If you see them during your visit, definitely give them a try.

Taino Bay’s Free Lazy River

For us, the lazy river was one of the biggest highlights of Taino Bay.

And here’s the important part:

The Lazy River Is Free

There is no additional admission charge to use the lazy river.

You simply get a tube and enjoy the experience.

The lazy river completely circles the second pool area.

That means you can spend time relaxing in the current while also seeing the surrounding pool area.

The experience is much more elaborate than we expected.

What Is the Taino Bay Lazy River Like?

The lazy river includes different sections with different water features.

As you float along, you’ll encounter:

• Water spraying from different areas
• Changes in the scenery
• Bridges
• Different themed sections
• Areas where the current moves faster
• Areas where the current slows down

It doesn’t feel like simply floating around a basic circular pool.

There are enough changes along the way to keep it interesting.

Some areas are more active.

You can simply float along and enjoy the ride.

The Lazy River Is Good for Adults Too

One question we hear often about cruise port water attractions is whether adults will feel out of place.

During our visit, the lazy river had people of different ages.

Although there were children using it, there were also plenty of adults.

We did not feel out of place at all.

In fact, the lazy river seemed to be enjoyed by people of all ages.

When you arrive at the lazy river, staff members help guests get into the tubes.

They were extremely helpful during our visit.

They helped us get situated and start floating.

They also helped keep our belongings safe while we enjoyed the water.

Because of their assistance and kindness, we even gave them a tip.

If you plan to spend time on the lazy river, consider bringing only the essentials with you.

We spoke with a woman who told us that she and her husband had received a massage at the port.

According to her, the experience was excellent and the prices were reasonable.

Puerto Plata is a fascinating destination.

We’ve visited the area multiple times and have enjoyed exploring beyond the port.

There are many options depending on how much time you have and what interests you.

Take a Taxi Into Downtown Puerto Plata

One of the easiest options is taking a taxi to the downtown area.

Taxis are available near the port.

You can visit the city center and explore on foot.

We’ve also walked through parts of the city during previous visits.

Downtown Puerto Plata offers a very different experience from the cruise port.

Instead of a purpose-built cruise destination, you get to experience more of the actual city.

You can see:

• Local streets
• Historic buildings
• Shops
• Restaurants
• Local life

For us, this is one of the best ways to experience more of the Dominican Republic.

Puerto Plata Is Very Walkable

We have found the downtown area to be very walkable.

We’ve previously done a walking tour of Puerto Plata and enjoyed experiencing the city on foot.

Of course, the weather can be hot.

This is the Caribbean, after all.

So, bring:

• Water
• A hat
• Comfortable clothing

One of the attractions we have visited is Mount Isabel de Torres.

The views from the mountain were beautiful, and the Christ the Redeemer statue provided some excellent photo opportunities.
