Of the four destinations in this comparison, Ocean Cay may be the least interested in impressing guests with a long list of manufactured attractions.

And we mean that as a compliment.

There is no enormous water park dominating the skyline.

There isn’t a giant theme-park atmosphere.

Instead, Ocean Cay’s biggest attraction is:

Ocean Cay itself.

The blue water, beaches, lighthouse, shoreline, and open spaces create a completely different feeling from CocoCay.

Ocean Cay feels less like a resort that happens to have a beach and more like a beach destination that has been developed carefully around its natural environment.

What Surprised Us Most About Ocean Cay

The biggest surprise was how much we enjoyed the slower pace.

You can look at Ocean Cay on paper and think:

“Where are all the attractions?”

But once you are there, that simplicity becomes the attraction.

There is something wonderful about not feeling as though you have to race from one thing to another.

The Beaches Are the Main Event

Ocean Cay has several beach areas, which means you can have noticeably different experiences depending on where you settle.

That also gives cruisers an opportunity to move away from the first crowded area they encounter.

Our advice is simple:

Explore before committing to the first chair you see.

A five- or ten-minute walk may produce a completely different atmosphere.

The Natural Setting

MSC has placed considerable emphasis on Ocean Cay as a marine-reserve destination.

That natural identity is what makes the island different from the more resort-heavy competitors.

You see the ship.

You see the lighthouse.

You see the ocean.

You see open sky.

The destination does not constantly compete with the scenery.

Food at Ocean Cay

On our more recent visit, the food experience was noticeably better than we expected.

A newer buffet area was well stocked and well staffed during our visit, and we thought the food was good.

That matters because food can significantly affect the private-island experience.

Nobody wants to spend half the beach day standing in line for lunch.

One Thing We Wish Ocean Cay Did Differently

One issue that stood out during our visit was the cost associated with certain chair-and-umbrella arrangements.

When we checked, the package we considered would have cost us approximately $38.

We chose not to purchase it.

Prices and policies can change, so check your sailing before relying on any exact amount.

But the experience reinforced something we value at private destinations:

Basic comfort should be easy to understand.

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is that you have to purchase an expensive upgrade to enjoy CocoCay.

You do not.

Royal Caribbean currently includes public beach access, Oasis Lagoon, chairs and umbrellas in complimentary areas, children’s water-play areas, island transportation, and complimentary dining options with the standard visit.

Paid experiences such as Thrill Waterpark, Hideaway Beach, Coco Beach Club, cabanas, and selected attractions are optional.

That is important.

You can spend very little beyond your cruise fare and still have an excellent CocoCay day.

Oasis Lagoon

The Great Stirrup Cay we personally experienced was much more of a traditional private-island beach stop.

Ocean Cay can be wonderful for relaxation, although walking and sand should be considered.

CocoCay may be easier for some travelers because of transportation and the variety of places to sit, eat, and relax.

Our Final Private-Island Rankings for 2026

1. Perfect Day at CocoCay

Best for: Families, activities, pools, mixed groups, and overall variety

CocoCay wins because it successfully serves more types of travelers than any other destination we’ve personally experienced.

You can spend money.

But you don’t have to.

You can swim in a pool.

Or never leave the beach.

You can chase activities.

Or sit in a chair all day.

That versatility is difficult to beat.

2. Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve

Best for: Beaches, scenery, couples, relaxation, photography, and evening visits

Ocean Cay comes very close to being our personal favorite.

For some travelers, it absolutely will be.

It provides a kind of experience that seems increasingly rare:

A cruise private destination where the destination itself is enough.

3. Celebration Key

Best for: Resort-style lagoons, Carnival families, food variety, social groups, and pool-focused days

Celebration Key has tremendous potential.

But because we have not yet experienced it ourselves, we are not comfortable ranking it above destinations we know firsthand.

That may change after our visit.

4. Great Stirrup Cay

Best for: Traditional beach days, snorkeling, new pool experiences, and Great Tides Waterpark

Fourth place should not be interpreted as “worst.”

Great Stirrup Cay is going through the biggest transformation of the four.

The version Norwegian is building may ultimately be substantially more competitive than the island we originally experienced.

We are particularly interested in seeing whether the new attractions enhance the island without removing the relaxed atmosphere that made us enjoy it.

Our Honest Bottom Line

If you want the safest all-around recommendation:

Choose Perfect Day at CocoCay.

If you want beautiful scenery and a peaceful beach day:

Choose Ocean Cay.

If you want a large, modern Carnival resort experience:

Celebration Key may be exactly what you’re looking for.

If you want a traditional beach destination that is rapidly adding major new attractions:

Great Stirrup Cay is becoming much more interesting.

But we wouldn’t choose an entire cruise solely because somebody told us one private island was “the best.”

Think about the kind of day you actually want.

Do you want:

• A quiet beach?

• A huge pool?

• Waterslides?

• Snorkeling?

• A swim-up bar?

• Kids activities?

• A premium beach club?

• Included food?

• A natural setting?

• Lots of social energy?

• Somewhere to read a book?

The answers will probably tell you which destination belongs at the top of your list.

For us, CocoCay currently wins the overall comparison because it does so many things well.

But Ocean Cay may be the destination that proves the most important lesson:

Sometimes the best private island isn’t the one with the most attractions.

Sometimes it is the one that gives you exactly what you came to The Bahamas for:

A chair near the water, beautiful blue ocean in front of you, the ship in the distance, and nowhere else you need to be.
