After spending seven days onboard Radiance of the Seas, we walked away with a lot of thoughts, impressions, and opinions. Radiance of the Seas is part of Royal Caribbean’s Radiance Class, a group of ships known for their glass-forward design, classic cruising feel, and smaller passenger count.
In this detailed review, we are sharing what we loved, what we didn’t love as much, and who we think this ship is best suited for. If you are considering Radiance of the Seas for an upcoming cruise, this guide will help you decide whether it is the right ship for your vacation style.
First Impressions of Radiance of the Seas
One of the first things you notice about Radiance of the Seas is how open, bright, and airy the ship feels. Thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows, glass elevators, and abundant natural light, you are constantly reminded that you are at sea.
With a maximum capacity of around 2,800 passengers, Radiance of the Seas feels noticeably smaller and more relaxed than Royal Caribbean’s newer mega-ships. This creates a more classic cruise experience that many travelers truly appreciate.
Outdoor Spaces: One of Radiance of the Seas’ Biggest Strengths
Front of the Ship Relaxation Areas
One of our favorite features of Radiance of the Seas is the abundance of outdoor space at the front of the ship. There are multiple levels with lounge chairs and tucked-away areas where you can relax, read a book, or enjoy uninterrupted ocean views.
If you are looking to escape crowds, we highly recommend exploring these forward decks. Many guests never venture there, which makes them feel like hidden gems.
Outdoor Seating at the Windjammer
We absolutely loved that the Windjammer buffet on Radiance of the Seas includes outdoor seating. Eating outside while watching the ship’s wake, what we like to call the “tail feathers,” is one of those simple pleasures that makes cruising special.
If you enjoy dining with ocean views, this is a major plus and elevates the Windjammer experience beyond a typical buffet.
The Pool Deck: Our Biggest Disappointment
While Radiance of the Seas excels in many areas, the pool deck size was a notable downside.
The pool deck felt crowded and tight, especially compared to the generous outdoor space found elsewhere on the ship. Seating was limited, and the layout did not comfortably accommodate the number of guests.
This issue was compounded by chair hogging, which seemed to be a consistent problem. Many chairs sat unused for hours with towels or belongings placed on them. Unfortunately, this policy was not actively enforced, making it frustrating for guests who wanted to actually use the space.
Bars and Lounges on Radiance of the Seas
Quill and Compass English Pub
The Quill and Compass English Pub was one of our favorite bars onboard. We love venues that span the width of the ship rather than feeling like a narrow hallway, and this pub delivered exactly that.
With live music, a welcoming atmosphere, and plenty of seating, it felt like a true destination rather than just a place to grab a drink.
Schooner Bar
The Schooner Bar on Radiance of the Seas is larger than many other versions we have seen. With full-size windows, nautical decor, and a long bar, it quickly became another favorite.
It felt relaxed, spacious, and inviting, making it an easy place to return to again and again.
Colony Club: Views, Elegance, and a Quiet Escape
One of the most underrated spaces onboard Radiance of the Seas is the Colony Club.
Located at the aft of the ship, the Colony Club offers stunning rear-facing ocean views through large windows that frame the ship’s wake beautifully. The decor is elegant and refined, giving the space a calm, classic feel.
For us, the Colony Club quickly became our favorite quiet bar onboard. It was the perfect place to enjoy a drink without loud music or crowds, especially on sea days or after dinner. If you are looking for a peaceful lounge with incredible views, the Colony Club is a must-visit.
The Centrum: The Heart of Radiance of the Seas
The Centrum is truly the heart of the ship. With soaring ceilings, glass elevators, and light streaming in from multiple decks, it is a beautiful and lively space.
We loved walking through the Centrum and looking up at all the levels above. The only downside is that seating is limited during events, so while it is easy to watch from upper decks, finding a seat on the main level can be challenging.
One thing we especially appreciated is that Radiance of the Seas has retained its original Centrum design, offering quiet nooks and open spaces on each deck. These areas are perfect for relaxing or even getting some work done.
Windjammer Buffet: Spacious and Well Designed
The Windjammer on Radiance of the Seas felt spacious and easy to navigate. Unlike some ships where buffet traffic feels congested, this layout allowed guests to move comfortably without feeling rushed or crowded.
Combined with the outdoor seating, this made the Windjammer one of our favorite buffet experiences across Royal Caribbean ships.
Specialty Dining on Radiance of the Seas
Radiance of the Seas offers several specialty restaurants that provide great alternatives to the main dining room and buffet. We enjoyed multiple specialty venues during our cruise, and each brought something different to the table.
Izumi: Our Favorite Specialty Restaurant
Izumi on Radiance of the Seas was hands down our favorite specialty dining experience.
If you enjoy sushi, Japanese cuisine, or lighter meals, Izumi is a must. Everything we ordered was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented. The quality of the sushi exceeded our expectations, and the atmosphere felt calm and intimate.
What we loved most about Izumi was how different it felt from traditional cruise dining. It was relaxed, not rushed, and offered a refreshing change of pace. If you plan to book only one specialty restaurant on Radiance of the Seas, Izumi would be our top recommendation.
Giovanni’s Table: Italian Comfort at Sea
Giovanni’s Table on Radiance of the Seas offers classic Italian comfort food in a warm, welcoming setting. The menu features familiar favorites like pasta, seafood, and traditional Italian dishes.
The atmosphere felt cozy and relaxed, making it a great choice for a slower-paced dinner. Giovanni’s Table is a solid option if you are craving Italian flavors and want a comfortable, sit-down dining experience.
Chops Grille: A Classic Steakhouse Option
Chops Grille is Royal Caribbean’s signature steakhouse, and it delivers a consistent experience onboard Radiance of the Seas. The menu includes premium steaks, seafood options, and classic steakhouse sides.
While we personally tend to favor lighter meals, Chops Grille remains a popular choice for guests celebrating special occasions or looking for a traditional steakhouse dinner while cruising.
Entertainment on Radiance of the Seas
The production shows onboard Radiance of the Seas were excellent. The singers, dancers, and orchestra delivered high-quality performances that rival what you might see on much larger ships.
Guest entertainers rotated throughout the cruise. While juggling acts and some comedy shows are not our personal favorites, we recognize that entertainment preferences are subjective. For us, musical performances were the standout.
Additional Dining and Activities
The Dog House
Seeing The Dog House on a Radiance Class ship was a fun surprise. It offers hot dogs, bratwursts, and sides right off the pool deck. While there were no vegetarian options for us, it is a convenient choice for a quick bite.
Park Cafe in the Solarium
The Park Cafe, located in the Solarium, became one of our favorite spots. It offered breakfast, light lunches, and late-night bites in a peaceful setting. It was never crowded and provided a great alternative to the Windjammer.
Outdoor Promenade and Helipad Access
Radiance of the Seas features an outdoor promenade that wraps around the ship, perfect for walking laps and enjoying the ocean air. At the front of the ship, guests also have access to the helipad, offering incredible views and extra outdoor space.
Sports, Activities, and Layout
The sports area was well organized, with a full basketball court, mini golf, and nearby teen and arcade spaces. Everything felt cohesive and easy to navigate.
Music Throughout the Ship
As music lovers, we appreciated the multiple pianos located throughout Radiance of the Seas. From the dining room to the Schooner Bar, theater, and Centrum, live piano music filled the ship and added to the overall atmosphere.
Cinema: A Hidden Gem
One unexpected highlight was the onboard cinema, which showed multiple movies each day. This would be especially enjoyable on itineraries like Alaska or Northern Europe.
Final Thoughts: Is Radiance of the Seas Worth It?
Radiance of the Seas impressed us in many ways. The ship offers:
A relaxed, uncrowded atmosphere
Exceptional outdoor space
Beautiful public areas
Strong entertainment
A comfortable ship size
While the pool deck size and chair hogging were drawbacks, they did not outweigh the many positives.
If you enjoy classic cruising, ocean views, and a ship that feels cozy rather than overwhelming, Radiance of the Seas is an excellent choice. We would happily sail on her again.
