Our Backstory: 25 Cruises Later… and We Finally Tried the Casino

We’ve been sailing together for about eight years (around 25 cruises!), and for most of that time, we barely set foot in the casino. At most, we’d use the tiny $6–$8 free play you sometimes get and then leave. But on one sailing last year, we put in $20 for fun (the “pigs” game got us!), lost it, and moved on.

Then we kept hearing about people getting free cruise offers from the casino. We assumed they were spending eye-watering amounts. Curiosity won. We decided to learn how it actually works—and discovered three legitimate ways to snag free or discounted sailings.

The 3 Ways to Earn Free or Discounted Cruises (Royal Caribbean Casino Royale)

1) The Annual Casino Loyalty Program

Royal Caribbean’s casino loyalty program (Casino Royale, separate from Crown & Anchor) has status tiers that reset every April. As you earn points during the year, you can climb through:

• Choice (entry)

• Prime

• Signature

• Master’s

One of the biggest perks as you move up: a free cruise for two (starting at interior, with higher tiers offering better categories). We haven’t hit Prime yet—but we’re actively working toward it, and the points we earn from regular play help us get there.

2) Onboard “Instant Rewards” (Per Sailing)

This one is the game-changer for beginners. On any given cruise, you can earn instant rewards (including a free cruise for one) by hitting point thresholds on that same sailing.
On Enchantment of the Seas, our sailing’s threshold for a free cruise (interior for one) was 400 points. The list of eligible sailings appears when you scan the casino host’s QR code—we saw mostly 3–4 day options at the 400-point level, plus a couple standouts we loved.

3) Marketing Offers (Email & Account)

If Casino Royale sees you play—even modestly—you may start receiving email offers and account-based offers. We’ve already received several after just a couple of real casino trips.
Confession time: Marshall checks his Casino Royale account daily (sometimes twice). Crystal checks monthly. Who’s right? Tell us in the comments. 😄

How Slot Points Really Work (Throughput 101)

If you play slots, the math is simple:

• 1 point per $5 of throughput.
  Throughput means total money cycled through the machine—not just what you brought to the casino. If you win and keep playing those winnings, that still counts toward throughput.

For table games, it’s more subjective. There’s no fixed “$X = 1 point.” Hosts assess your play based on time and average bet. Since we’re mostly slot players, we love the clarity of the slots system.

You can see your exact point total on the slot screen at any time—super helpful for aiming at 400, 600, 800, etc.

Our First Instant-Reward Win: Hitting 400 Points

On Enchantment, Crystal realized she’d already earned 206 points (shoutout to the “cats” game!). With encouragement (and some great button-pushing tips from our new friend Chris—hi Chris! 🫶), we went for the 400-point target and hit it on the last day.

We went to the casino host desk, they checked Crystal’s card, and printed the certificate—instantly. That piece of paper is gold. From the QR list, we picked a 5-day cruise on Freedom of the Seas (we love Freedom!). Then we:

1. Booked a NextCruise reservation onboard (placed a deposit).

2. Called Casino Royale after, gave them the certificate number + reservation number.

3. They linked the two—boom, our “free” cruise was booked.

Real Numbers: Exactly What We Spent (and Saved)

Let’s walk through the full cost of that 5-day Freedom sailing, including the casino play used to earn it.

Cruise side:

• Deposit via NextCruise: $200

• Casino Royale charges (port fees & taxes for Crystal + fare + taxes/fees for Marshall): $293
  Cruise subtotal: $493

Casino side (to earn 400 points):

• Total played: $375

• Cash-out winnings: $121

• Net casino spend: $375 – $121 = $254

All-in total for the “free” cruise:
$493 (cruise) + $254 (net casino spend) = $747

✅ The math in our notes had a tiny typo ($4.99) when we meant $493. The correct total is $747.

For a 5-day Freedom of the Seas cruise plus several nights of casino entertainment, we felt really good about that price.

Since then, we’ve earned two additional instant-reward cruises that were even better deals (a 7-day and a 6-day). On the loyalty front, we’re making progress too:

• Crystal: 804 points (~one-third to Prime)

• Marshall: 1,282 points (over halfway to Prime)

When we hit Prime, we’ll get a Prime cruise for two, plus we’ll still be eligible for instant rewards on sailings where we hit the thresholds. Double win!

How to Find & Claim Instant Rewards Onboard (Step-by-Step)

1. Visit the Casino Host Desk on embarkation day.

2. Scan the QR code for current instant-reward thresholds and the eligible sailing list.

3. Set a target (e.g., 400 points) based on your budget and the sailings you like.

4. Insert your SeaPass every time you play (no card = no points!).

5. Track your points on the slot screen as you go.

6. When you hit your goal, return to the host and print your certificate.

7. Make a NextCruise booking onboard (we used a $200 deposit).

8. After the cruise, call Casino Royale to link your certificate and NextCruise reservation.

9. Pay taxes/fees (and the second guest’s fare if applicable). Bon voyage!

Budgeting, Mindset, and Tips We Wish We Knew Sooner

• Decide your budget first. If you hit your limit, stop. No deal is worth overspending.

• Think of the casino as entertainment. The “free” cruise is the bonus.

• Start with slots for transparency. You’ll always know where you are on points.

• Check offers regularly. (Crystal: monthly. Marshall: daily. Who’s right? You tell us!)

• Use your SeaPass every time. Untracked play = vanishing points.

• Claim certificates immediately. Don’t wait until debarkation day.

• Look for the right sailings. The QR list changes—sometimes there’s a gem hiding in there.

Is a “Free” Casino Cruise Really Free?

There’s no truly free lunch—you’ll always pay taxes, port fees, and often a second-guest fare. But with smart play and a clear budget, we’ve found these offers to be excellent value, especially when paired with the fun we’re already having onboard.
