Dominica instantly felt different. From the moment we stepped off the ship in Roseau, the capital city, we knew we were in for something special. The dock was small and wooden, giving a rustic and authentic feel. Unlike some commercialized ports of call in the Caribbean, Dominica had a raw, lush energy.

We drove past the island’s main river and quickly found ourselves surrounded by thick rainforest and mountain views — it was clear why Dominica has earned its title as The Nature Island.

And that was just the beginning.

🚐 The Start of the Adventure: What is the “Hot Springs and Titou Gorge Escape” Excursion?

This popular Dominica cruise excursion combines two of the island’s most spectacular features — Titou Gorge, a dramatic volcanic canyon, and natural hot springs heated by geothermal activity.

We booked it through our Royal Caribbean itinerary, and it’s truly a “choose-your-own-adventure” style outing. Whether you’re in it for the swim, the scenery, or the spa-like hot pools, this experience offers something for everyone.

🏞️ Titou Gorge: A Natural Wonder with Hollywood History

After a scenic van ride into the hills of Dominica, we arrived at our first stop — Titou Gorge, which means “Little Throat” in Creole. You may actually recognize this stunning location — it was featured in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest!

Our guides, Cammy and Kastler (more on them later), pointed out the very rock walls where film crews drilled holes to mount cameras. And yes, we stood in the same water where Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom once swam!

Before we jumped in, we were required to put on flotation devices. And thank goodness for that — the water was shockingly cold. So cold, in fact, that I (Crystal) had a moment where I literally couldn’t catch my breath. A lovely couple on the tour, Alan and Cheryl, helped calm me down with breathing techniques.

💦 Swimming Through Titou Gorge: A Test of Courage and Wonder

Swimming upstream through the gorge was unlike anything we’ve ever done. The strong current, the roaring sound of the water, the narrow canyon walls surrounding us — it was all so surreal.

If you’re planning to visit Dominica, you must experience this. But fair warning: it’s not for the faint of heart. The current was strong enough that ropes were placed under the water to help us pull ourselves forward. Without them, it would have been nearly impossible.

The effort was 100% worth it — at the end of the gorge was a magnificent waterfall, cascading down the rock face with stunning power. Due to heavy rainfall the night before, the water was too strong for us to swim right up to it, but we got close enough to be completely awed.

We were amazed by our guide Kastler, who helped every step of the way. If it weren’t for his steady hand and strength, I honestly don’t think I would have made it through. Talk about a Dominica cruise tour with incredible local guides!

🔥 From Frigid to Fiery: Soaking in Dominica’s Volcanic Hot Springs

After the thrilling cold of the gorge, we headed to our next destination — Dominica’s natural hot springs. And let me tell you, this was paradise.

Thanks to the island’s volcanic foundation, the water in these pools is naturally heated by the earth itself. In fact, it’s so hot that they have to cool it down using water from the nearby waterfalls!

There were multiple pools at different temperatures:

• Hot

• Hotter

• Hottest

We soaked in them all, and each one offered its own incredible view — from waterfalls cascading nearby to lush green mountain scenery. One of our favorite moments? Slathering ourselves in volcanic mud, then rinsing off under a mini waterfall. It felt like a spa treatment, but better — because it was completely natural and so full of energy.

🚠 Looking Ahead: Dominica’s Record-Breaking Tram Project

On the way down the mountain, Cammy pointed out something very exciting — Dominica is building what will be the longest tram in the world. Set to open in December 2025, the aerial tram will stretch several miles and take riders high above the island’s famous Boiling Lake and volcanic terrain.

You can actually see the structure under construction already. We can’t wait to return and take that tram ride once it’s complete. Another reason to put Dominica on your cruise bucket list!

💡 Final Thoughts: Why This Dominica Excursion is a Must-Do

We’ve done many cruise excursions over the years, but this one? This was in a league of its own. It was exciting, immersive, rejuvenating, and unlike anything else we’ve experienced in the Caribbean. The mix of adrenaline, nature, and relaxation made it an absolutely perfect day.

As soon as we got back on the ship, we ran to the Next Cruise desk to see when Royal Caribbean would be visiting Dominica again. And yes — we booked it on the spot. We’re already counting down the days until we can return to this magical island.
